NAPLAN Preparation

NAPLAN Tutoring

Helping your child perform their best in the NAPLAN tests.

NAPLAN preparation is incorporated into tuition for most of our students who will be sitting the tests next year (13-25th March 2024).

Our tutors are able to increase the focus and intensity placed on NAPLAN upon a parent’s request, to ensure their child is well prepared for the examination. This more intensive approach includes teaching exam tips & strategies, exposing students to past exam questions and ensuring each lesson is relevant and beneficial to their end goal – performing their best in the NAPLAN examination.

We recommend a combination of Weekly Tutoring Lessons & our NAPLAN Preparation Course (in the school holidays) to help students prepare for and perform in the NAPLAN Tests.

What is NAPLAN?

NAPLAN stands for, the National Assessment Program in Literacy And Numeracy.
It is an annual and nationwide assessment sat by students in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9.

The test is designed to assess student’s understanding of critical literacy and numeracy skills throughout their schooling.

It ensures schools are progressing individually as well as in comparison to their peers on a national level.
NAPLAN preparation courses prepare students for the following areas:

Students are required to read a range of text types before being assessed on their knowledge and interpretation of language conventions in context.

This online test contains multiple-choice & technology-enhanced questions such as 'drag-and-drop' and 'hot-text'.

Students will be given 40 minutes to write either an imaginative, informative or persuasive piece based on a writing stimulus.

Year 3 students will complete this test on paper whilst Year 5, 7 and 9 students will undertake this exam online.

Conventions of Language

This test assesses spelling, grammar and punctuation. It contains multiple-choice, text entry & technology-enhanced questions such as 'drag-and-drop' and 'hot-text'.

All students will sit this test online.

This online test will assess knowledge, skills and understanding of three content strands: number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability.

There are 2 sections for Year 7 & 9 students – a calculator and non-calculator section.

Hear what our parents & students have to say

At Maths Words Not Squiggles, we follow a comprehensive approach to NAPLAN test preparation involving weekly tutoring lessons and our NAPLAN preparation program during school holidays.

Weekly tutoring sessions can be taken as individual lessons or micro group lessons with a maximum of three students. Those who need personalised attention will benefit from one-on-one sessions with our tutors, who can adjust the content based on what the student needs to improve on to prepare for NAPLAN.

For instance, their sessions may focus more on reading and writing skills if their initial assessment shows a lack of proficiency in those areas. Students who prefer collaborative learning can try our micro group tutoring sessions. Regardless of the format, our NAPLAN preparation classes can improve each student’s skills, knowledge and confidence to tackle any test, including NAPLAN.

Since the tests cover literacy and numeracy education, our NAPLAN preparation classes focus on reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar, punctuation) and numeracy lessons. We’ve tailored the content to the specific requirements of NAPLAN, ensuring a targeted and effective preparation for every year level.

Absolutely! At Maths Words Not Squiggles, we offer the flexibility for students to prepare at home or any location through NAPLAN online practice tests. We believe that NAPLAN training should be accessible to all students. If none of our locations in the Northern Beaches, Sutherland Shire and South Sydney work for your child, you can enrol them in our NAPLAN online preparation tutoring or courses.

Besides accessibility, we believe that this helps students adapt to the digital world — and even prepares them for NAPLAN tests, which are all conducted in an online platform during Years 5, 7 and 9. Therefore, our NAPLAN training sessions are also aimed at increasing students’ familiarity with digital testing environments.

In Australia, NAPLAN is designed to measure essential skills of students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. That may sound intimidating, but there’s no need to lose sleep over the possibility of failing NAPLAN! It functions as a diagnostic tool for a student’s reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy skills, but unlike traditional exams, it’s not a pass-or-fail test. It won’t affect a student’s grades or academic standing.

However, we understand that students want to perform at their best. That’s why we offer NAPLAN preparation classes! All you need to do is enrol your child in our weekly tutoring sessions or intensive NAPLAN preparation courses.

Scoring differs slightly from a standard exam since NAPLAN results don’t affect students’ grades. Instead of numerical scores, a student receives one of the following “grades” in each category:

  • Exceeding
  • Strong
  • Developing
  • Needs additional support

If a student receives an ‘exceeding’ or ‘strong’ mark in one section of the test, they have a high level of proficiency. Meanwhile, a ‘developing’ grade suggests they are still progressing in the tested areas, while ‘needs additional support’ shows there is a lot of room for improvement.

To get high marks across the board, NAPLAN preparation classes, where we assess a student’s proficiency in various areas, can help. NAPLAN training helps students identify and work on their strengths and weaknesses as needed before the actual testing. Additionally, we’ll cover exam tips and strategies to improve test-taking strategy.

Certainly! At Maths Words Not Squiggles, our tutors are adept at customising sessions to address every child’s individual strengths and weaknesses.

We take a personalised approach to ensure that the preparation is targeted, effective and aligned with your child’s learning needs and style. If you’re concerned about your child’s preparation for NAPLAN, we highly recommend enrolling them in weekly individual tutoring sessions.
